Ribera de Playa Azul, Chiapas, México
August 12, 2014|Posted in: Beach, Nature
The Ribera de Playa Azul is a strip of beach of very dark sand further north on the coast from Tapachula (and Barra de Zacapulco). As with other strips of beach in this part of Chiapas, you access it by boat. $10 MXN per person each way will get you there and back and the ride is extremely short. All you do is cross to the other side of the canal or river. There is a parking area next to where the boats launch from and there is no fee to park.
Once you arrive on the other side, walk toward the ocean and you will be presented with beach as far as you can see in either direction. The water here seemed very swimmer friendly in close to the shore, unlike in Barra de Zacapulco where the water seemed better for surfing and not much else. Not to say you couldn’t surf here. In fact, this is known as a surf spot, not quite like Sayulita is known as a surf spot, but nevertheless it is known as such. Only to say that if all you desire is to wade in the water, this is your destination. Also, the water was much cleaner here than in Barra de Zacapulco, though still possessive of a more greenish hue.
You will find covered seating areas (palapas) and restaurants along the beach. There also seem to be some basic cabañas. We did not sample the lodgings nor the food, so we cannot speak to quality nor costs. You can camp here if you bring your own gear, all for the great low cost of free. Inquire with your hosts upon arrival.
This extent of beach gets crowded on the weekends and holidays. Come here at any other time and it’s basically empty. If you want the beach to yourself, you know what to do.
